Disease Research

Fifth Grade Students:

Your job in the next week is to find ONE fact about your disease that you plan to research. Look on the internet, in a book, check out some books from the library! Please write your ONE fact in a complete sentence on the blog.

Example:

Influenza is a highly contagious disease. Three things that you need to make sure that you do not get the disease are wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, clean things that are touched, and avoid others that are sick!

If you have a peanut allergy, you should carry an Epi-Pen around with you everywhere you go so if you have a reaction(which is called an anaphylactic reaction) you have enough medicine to last until you get to the hospital. If you are allergic to peanuts, you are also allergic to ALL nuts, and legumes(any green veggie)!! Crazy huh? Be careful with people who have peanut allergies and if you have one yourself!!!

Polio is a disease in wich a virus attacks your throat, intestines, spinal cord, and lots of other places in your body by being spread not by germs of the mouth but germs from your poop. (and no I am not kidding!) The virus attacks and kills the nerves that send messages to the brain, around any where there are enough germs to do so.

If you have alzheimers,a very common symptom is memory loss. For example, you could forget the name of your kid. You are normally 65 and older when you get alzheimers. That is really sad! Another common symptom is not being able to reason things out like what numbers are and what they are used for. You also will start misplacing items like your wallet. One real life example is a man that puts his shoes in the fridge. In fact, the symptoms are so bad, that they themselves are bad enough to be considered as a disease!!!

Hurler's Syndrome is a rare, inherited disease of metabolism in which a person can't break down big chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans. Some symptoms include halted growth, mental retardation, deafness, abnormal bones in the spine, and claw hand. The symptoms for this disease usually appear around the ages from 3 to 8. When my uncle was born with it 47 years ago, there was no treatment for it. Today, they use bone marrow transplants to try to treat it.

If you have Lung Cancer you probably have it because you are or were a smoker or you don't have a healthly lifestyle. My grandpa had Lung Cancer because he smoked and he died from it. That is one reason that you can get Lung Cancer.

Breast Cancer starts with a cancerous tumor that starts from cells of the breast. The disease occures mostly in women, but men can get it too. The lymph system is important because it is one of the ways in which breast cancer can be spread. Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped collections of the immune system cells that are connected by lymphatic vessels. Lymphatic vessels are like small vines. This is one way breast cancer starts.

One way to help prevent skin cancer is to wear a lot of sun screen and to not be in the sun for too long at a time. This is a very serious disease and I know I don't want to get skin cancer.

There is 4 diferent types of diabetes. The type I thought sounded interesting is called Pre-Diabetes. What happens is that you will almost always get Pre-Diabetes before you get Type 2 DIabetes. Blood glucose levels that are higher then normal but still not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. 54 MILLION people in the U.S. have pre-diabetes! Thats just in the U.S. Crazy isn't it. Long-term damages that happen to the body, heart and circulatory systum may be ocurring during pre-diabetes.

I am studing ODC (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
A person with OCD could fear or dislike germs and dirt very much. Worry about a thing or task that was done not very good. Or think of evil and sinful things that you could do.

Another fact I found was that OCD use to be very rare, now they are questioning about that.

Those are two interesting facts I found.

Epidemic typhus also called "jail fever" "hospital fever" and "louse-bourne fever" these are the only types I'm going to write because there are 6 types and they all have long names. Louse-bourne fever is called so because it is louse-bourne (um..duh?) So anyway Typhus was first documented in 1083 at a convent near Salemo,Italy.

Hepatitis A is usually transmitted by contact with contaminated food. Sometimes it is transmitted by people who don't wash their hands. It can turn your skin yellow, make you lose your appetite, and make you feel like you are going to throw up. Luckily, it doesn't cause death and you recover after being sick for a long time!
